How to build a cactus bowl
Here’s a quick guide to building your own indoor cactus garden in a bowl. These cactus bowls are easy to make and create a sticking addition to any room.
Choose the right vessel
You’ll need something with the right depth and width to allow your cacti to grow. Our advice would be to not cram too many plants into the bowl even though it’s tempting to fill it. Your cacti will grow so give them a bit of breathing space. Also it’s nice to add decorative rocks.
First place a thin layer of sand in the bottom of the bowl. This will act as a reservoir if you accidentally over water your cactus garden.
Add the soil
Here you have a choice. Use a pre-mixed cactus soil, or use some regular rich compost but mix in some of your sand. Fill your bowl with the compost mix, up to 2cm below the bowl edge. Press it down - this will make the planting stage easier.
Prepare your cacti
Remove your cactus from its plastic pot. Now give it a little tickle to loosen the bottom of the soil. This tells the plant it’s no longer pot bound. You might also want to remove a bit of soil close to the cactus. This will make it easier to decorate right up to the base of your plant without having to bury it.
Dig the right size hole
Now that your cacti are prepared to planted you’ll be able to see how big the whole is you need to make. Ideally you don’t want the roots to hit the bottom of the bowl. Aim to keep them out of the sand reservoir layer.
Plant your cactus
Put the plant in the hole and then secure it in place by pushing the soil around the cactus. Repeat the process with the rest of your cacti working from left to right. It might be a good idea to place them into the bowl beforehand and take a picture so you know where they’re all going to go. Pop them all in!
Decorate your cactus garden
Cover the top layer with sand, and then add beach rocks, or pebbles. You’re done!
Your cacti will enjoy a warm and bright spot. Water it sparingly once a month, and avoid getting the plants wet.
