We get asked this question a lot by our customers in our little London cactus shop. How often should I water a cactus?. It’s a tricky question, and it does depend on the cactus. Here is a general cactus watering rule we follow.

Cacti go through growing seasons which is when increased watering is required. If we split the year into two halves it makes a little more sense:

Warmer Months/March to October: Cactus Growing Season - Water once every 10 days to two weeks.

Colder Months/October to March: Not Cactus Growing Season - Water once every month.

Some cactus watering guides mention not watering your cactus at all out of growing season. This feels a little harsh as our homes often have heating switched on to full blast to combat the cold.

We build a lot of Cactus Terrariums in our London shop where they are for sale. Their easy to care for setups make them perfect house plants and easy terrarium plants.

Can you overwater a cactus?

Yes! And you can overwater cacti quickly. If the cactus is left sitting in very soggy soil it will simply rot and perish. Keep you watering very light. It’s better to neglect your plant and leave it dry than to overwater and soak your cactus.
